ABSTRACT Podzols are highly sandy soils, in which elements, such as potassium, needed by crops, are easily leached. Studies have indicated that biochar can contribute to increasing cation exchange capacity of the soil, which can improve the retention of bases. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the poultry litter biochar combined or not with increasing doses of KCl, on leaching and soil base content, on the production of green manure biomass, and on the distribution of K in the soil-water-plant system. A 2 × 3 factorial experiment was conducted in randomized blocks with 6 repetitions: without and with biochar (1% v / v, produced from poultry litter) × without K, with 53.65 and 107.30 mg dm-3 of K (as KCl). The experiment was carried out in four steps: Step 1) Soil incubation with the treatments (for 20 days) followed by chemical analysis of the soil; Step 2) First leaching: the containers (made with PVC with 0.30 m high) received the newly incubated soil in the surface layer and soil without treatment in the subsurface layer. The containers received water until saturation plus 50 % of the total pore volume and the leached water was collected and analyzed; Step 3) Cultivation of green manure (Mucuna aterrima) in the containers of Step 2 and harvest within 40 days (evaluation of biomass and K content); Step 4) after the mucuna harvest, the containers were subjected to second leaching. The leaching solution and the soil from the surface and subsurface layers were collected for chemical analysis. Biochar increased the pH, cationic exchange capacity, P, K, Ca, and Mg levels in the newly incubated soil, in the surface and subsurface layer. The increasing doses of KCl proportionally increased biomass production and K accumulation in green manure, and the biochar increased this response and reduces the need for potassium fertilization by 50 %. With biochar, the accumulation of total K in the soil-plant-water system increases by 125 % and, in the soil-plant system, by 145 %. Biochar changes the K ratio in the soil-plant-water system. With biochar, proportionally, the highest accumulated percentage of K occurred mainly in the soil surface and subsurface layer, and did not result in higher percentages of K in the leached water. Biochar produced from poultry litter can be used as a good alternative to improve the chemical properties of Podzols and reduce nutrient losses.

ABSTRACT Background: Clay extraction sites result from mining activities they present sterile, compacted and low-nutrient soils. They have been housing eucalypts crops for wood production. Their management, together with green manure inoculated with symbiont microorganisms, can increase the efficiency of nutrient uptake and reduce the need for chemical fertilization. The aim of the present study is to assess the growth and uptake of macronutrients by Eucalyptus grandis seedlings grown in substrate from clay extraction sites, based on intercropping system farming, with green manure inoculated with rhizobia and/or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs). The experiment followed a completely randomized design, with three repetitions, and the following treatments: cultivation of eucalypt (no intercropping) inoculated, or not, with AMFs; eucalypt intercropping system with Canavalia ensiformis Lam. or Canavalia brasiliensis Mart ex Benth., inoculated, or not, with AMF´s and/or rhizobia. Isolates of the symbiont microorganism were collected from spontaneous plants grown in clay extraction-site soils. Eucalypt seedlings and green manure were grown, together, in 6 L pots filled with substrate from clay extraction sites. Green manure shoot was cut 45 days after cultivation and eucalypt was harvested 60 days after it. Results: Inoculation with AMF´s+ rhizobia reduced the C:N ratio and increased N and P acquisition by C. ensiformis. Conclusions: Inoculation of native AMFs from the clay extraction site was effective in boosting the growth and nutrient acquisition of eucalypt plants grown in this substrate, in cultivation intercropped, or not, with C. ensiformis or C. brasiliensis. It also reduced visible symptoms of nutritional deficiency. Ca, Mg and K concentration in eucalypt plants was not changed by green manure cultivation or by inoculation with AMFs or rhizobia.

ABSTRACT Alternative substrates were evaluated for mycorrhizal inoculants production considering the beneficial effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) for plants and environment. The first step of the experiment aimed at evaluating the potential of substrates produced from sugarcane bagasse (SB), coconut fibre (CF) and urban waste compost (UWC) to produce AMF inoculants, by using Brachiaria decumbens as multiplier plant. The experiment has followed a randomized block design, at 7x3 factorial arrangement (seven substrates: SB, CF, SB+CF 1:1, SB+UWC 3:1, CF+UWC 3:1, SB+CF+UWC 3:3:2, Soil+Sand 3:1, vs. three substrate preparations: inoculated/sterilized, inoculated/non-sterilized, non-inoculated/sterilized). Inoculums produced in the first experimental stage were tested at the second stage, based on the inoculated/sterilized preparation. Seed germination, dry shoot biomass, mycorrhizal root rate and total spore production were assessed in both tests. There was significant decrease in seed emergence in organic substrates in relation to Soil+Sand, although the plants growth in organic substrates was greater. Artificial inoculation was not superior to spontaneous substrate mycorrhization or affected inoculum production. Mycorrhizal colonization of roots was equivalent in most organic substrates and in Soil+Sand. However, spore production stood out in organic substrate mixes, mainly when CF and UWC were used. This finding was confirmed at the second experimental stage.

RESUMO O cultivo de mudas de espécies com raízes tuberosas como Moringa oleifera Lam. (moringa), requer recipientes bem dimensionados e o uso de substratos adequados, considerando que a muda será retirada do recipiente antes do plantio. Bagaço de cana, composto de lixo urbano (composto) e vermicomposto são resíduos promissores na composição de substratos. O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade das mudas de moringa cultivadas em substratos produzidos a partir de bagaço de cana associado com composto ou vermicomposto em tubetes de diferentes volumes. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2x7, sendo: volumes dos tubetes (50 e 240 mL) x sete substratos (substrato comercial; bagaço de cana misturado a composto de lixo urbano em tres diferentes proporções (1:3; 1:1 e 3:1) e bagaço de cana misturado a vermicomposto nas proporções 1:3; 1:1 e 3:1). Concluiu-se que o recipiente de 240 mL foi o mais adequado para a produção de mudas de moringa. Substratos com maiores proporções de composto orgânico resultaram em maior crescimento da parte aérea e das raízes tuberosas, conteúdo e eficiência do uso de nitrogênio, sendo equivalente ao substrato comercial. Maiores proporções de bagaço de cana na composição do substrato proporcionaram maior facilidade de retirada das mudas dos tubetes e melhor qualidade física do torrão após a retirada da muda do tubete.

ABSTRACT The cultivation of tuberous-root species such as Moringa oleifera Lam. (moringa) requires well-dimensioned containers and the use of appropriate substrates, since seedlings will be removed from the container before their planting. Sugarcane bagasse, urban waste compost (compost), and vermicompost are promising wastes for substrate composition. The present study aims to assess the quality of moringa grown in substrate produced from sugarcane bagasse associated with compost or vermicompost in different-volume tubes. The study followed a randomized blocks design, at 2x7 factorial arrangement, namely: tubes’ volumes (50 and 240 mL) x seven substrates (commercial substrate; sugarcane bagasse associated with urban waste compost at three different ratios (1:3; 1:1 and 3:1) and sugarcane bagasse associated with vermicompost at ratios 1:3; 1:1 and 3:1). In conclusion, the 240 mL container was the most appropriate one for moringa seedlings’ production. Substrates presenting higher organic compost ratios led to greater shoot and tuberous root growth and to greater nitrogen-use accumulation and efficiency, which was equivalent to that of the commercial substrate. Higher sugarcane bagasse rates in substrate composition made it easier to remove the seedlings from the tubes and led to better physical quality of the clod after seedling removal from the tubes.

RESUMO A associação de biochar a adubos verdes no cultivo de mamoeiro pode ser uma técnica de manejo promissora, principalmente em sua primeira fase de cultivo. Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de biochar e adubo verde (Mucuna aterrina) no crescimento e nutrição de mudas de Carica Papaya e na fertilidade do solo. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos casualizados (5 blocos), em esquema fatorial 2 x 2: presença e ausência de mucuna e presença e ausência de biochar. No crescimento da parte aérea e das raízes do mamoeiro, e também nas características químicas do solo, a aplicação de biochar ou mucuna resultou em incrementos significativos, enquanto a aplicação conjunta não proporcionou efeitos sinergísticos, exceto para o teor foliar de P. A aplicação de biochar e de biochar + adubo verde proporcionou rápido crescimento inicial em altura das plantas. No entanto, apresentou, também, deficiência visível de N, apesar dos maiores conteúdos e eficiência de utilização de N, P, K, Ca e Mg nas plantas. O efeito da aplicação conjunta de biochar e mucuna é sinérgico para o teor foliar de P e altura das plantas. A aplicação individual ou em conjunto de biochar e mucuna aumenta o crescimento e nutrição de plantas de mamão e mantém a fertilidade do solo.

ABSTRACT The association between biochar and green manure in the papaya crop may be a promising management technique, mainly in its first growth stage. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of biochar and green manure (Mucuna aterrina) on the growth and nutrition of Carica papaya seedlings, as well as on soil fertility. The experiment followed a randomized block design (5 blocks), in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement: with and without mucuna and with and without biochar. The biochar or mucuna application significantly increased the papaya plant shoot and root growth, as well as the chemical features of the soil, whereas their joint application did not provide synergistic effects, except for the leaf P concentration. The application of biochar and biochar + mucuna enabled a fast initial increase in plant height. However, it also showed a visible N deficiency, despite the increased N, P, K, Ca and Mg accumulation and use efficiency in the plants. The effect of the biochar/mucuna joint application is synergistic for the leaf P content and plant height. The individual or joint application of biochar and mucuna increases the papaya plant growth and nutrition and maintains the soil fertility.

RESUMO Associações simbióticas de espécies arbóreas com fungos micorrízicos podem proporcionar o maior crescimento e nutrição das mudas, sendo alternativas importantes para o estabelecimento no campo, principalmente em áreas com restrições edáficas ou para espécies com alta exigência nutricional. No Brasil, o cultivo de Tectona grandis (teca) tem sido realizado em regiões do cerrado, em solos de baixa fertilidade. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito da inoculação de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) sobre o crescimento e nutrição mineral de mudas de teca. O experimento foi realizado em delineamento em blocos casualizados (seis blocos), com quatro tratamentos: 1) Testemunha (sem inoculação de fungos micorrízicos); 2) Inoculação com Rhizophagus clarus; 3) Inóculo de FMAs obtido de plantio de teca no Mato Grosso (inóculo MT) com vinte anos; e 4) Inóculo de FMAs nativos de cava de extração de argila de Campos dos Goytacazes (inóculo de Campos). As plântulas foram inoculadas e cultivadas em vasos de 6 dm3, por 135 dias, e foram avaliadas quanto à altura e ao diâmetro da base do caule. Amostras de raízes foram coletadas para avaliação da porcentagem de colonização com FMAs. As raízes e a parte aérea foram secas, separadamente, em estufa de circulação forçada de ar (a 650C por 72 horas) e em seguida determinada a massa seca e teores de P, K e S. A inoculação com fungos micorrízicos, principalmente o isolado de Rhizophagus clarus e o inóculo de Campos, proporcionou maior crescimento e maior aquisição em relação a K e S das mudas de teca. A inoculação com os fungos micorrízicos proporcionou maior eficiência de utilização de nutrientes.

ABSTRACT Symbiotic associations between tree species and mycorrhizal fungi may lead to better growth and nutrition of seedlings and so it becomes an important alternative to the establishment in the field, mainly in edaphic restriction areas, or to species of high nutritional demands. The cultivation of Tectona grandis (teca) in Brazil has been conducted in Cerrado areas with low fertility soils. The aim of the present study is to assess the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on the growth and mineral nutrition of teca seedlings. The experiment was performed in randomized blocks (six blocks), with four repetitions: 1) witness (inoculation-free mycorrhizal fungi); 2) inoculation with Rhizophagus clarus; 3) native AMF inoculum from twenty-year old teca cultivation in Mato Grosso state (MT inoculum); and 4) native AMF inoculum from clay extraction in Campos do Goytacazes (Campos inoculum). The plantlets were inoculated and cultivated in 6 dm³ pots for 135 days and assessed for stem hight and diameter of the stem base. Root samples were collected in order to assess the percentage of AMF colonization. The roots and the aerial part were dried, separately, in a forced air circulation oven at 65°C for 72 hours. Subsequently, the dry weight and the content of P, K AND S were determined. The mycorrhizal fungi inoculation, mainly the Rhizophagus clarus isolate and the Campos inoculum, has promoted better growth and K and S acquisition by teca seedlings. The inoculation using mycorrhizal fungi allowed greater nutrient use efficiency.

ABSTRACT Mining activities generally affect soil quality, degrading it and creating the need for consistent environmental recovery efforts. This study evaluates the influence of monospecific and mixed stands of Sesbania virgata (S) and Eucalyptus camaldulensis (E) on the chemical properties and microbial activity of the soil in a degraded area by clay extraction in the northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Four treatments (100S:100 % Sesbania , 100E: 00 % Eucalyptus , 50S:50E: 50 % Sesbania + 50 % Eucalyptus , and DASV: a degraded area with spontaneous vegetation) were established according to a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Samples were collected in the 0.00-0.10 m layer in the rainy season (March) and the dry season (September). The properties evaluated were pH in water; contents of P, K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Al 3+ , H+Al, N, and C; C/N ratio; total microbial activity (soil respiration - CO 2 emission); and total enzymatic activity (fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis). The reforestation of degraded areas by clay mining with the species S. virgata and E. camaldulensis either in monospecific or mixed stands increased the nutrient contents, C levels, and total microbial activity in the soil. It was possible to separate the planting systems (100S, 100E, 50S:50E) and the DASV using principal component analysis. In both seasons, soil C contents, chemical properties, and biological variables improved in the planted areas, in contrast with the DASV. The revegetation of degraded areas by mining improved the chemical and biological properties of the soil, leading to higher soil quality in revegetated areas compared to degraded areas with natural vegetation.

RESUMO A Moringa oleifera Lam. (moringa) é uma espécie vegetal com grande potencial de uso nos setores alimentício, medicinal e forrageiro, no processo de clareamento e descontaminação de água, produção de biocombustível, dentre outros. Técnicas de produção de mudas com uso de resíduos regionais são apropriadas para a introdução desta espécie em comunidades carentes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as respostas nutricionais e de crescimento de mudas de moringa, cultivadas em substratos com diferentes concentrações de fibra da casca de coco verde (FCV), associadas a composto orgânico (CO). O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos casualizados. Foram testados dois compostos orgânicos: o composto de lixo urbano (CLU) e o vermicomposto (VC) associados a FCV em várias proporções volumétricas (CO:FCV): 0:100; 25:75; 50:50; 75:25 a 100:0%. Após 51 dias de cultivo, foi observado que o aumento da concentração de FCV em relação ao composto orgânico reduziu a altura, a massa da matéria seca, o Índice de Qualidade de Dickson e os conteúdos de N, P, K, Ca e Mg das mudas. Não houve diferença, para essas características comparando-se o uso do composto de lixo urbano e o do vermicomposto. Substratos com 100% de FCV e sem adubação complementar ocasionaram sintomas de deficiência de N nas mudas de moringa.

ABSTRACT Moringa oleifera Lam. is a vegetal species with great potential to use as food, medicine and forage as well as water clarifying and decontamination agent, biofuel, among others. Low cost techniques for seedling production using regional residues are useful to introduce this species in low-income communities. This research aimed to evaluate the nutritional responses and growth of moringa seedlings cultivated in substrates with different concentrations of green coconut fiber (GCF) associated to organic compounds (OC). The experiment was performed in randomized blocks. Two organic compounds were tested: the urban waste compost (UWC) and earthworm compost (EC) associated with GCF in various volumetric proportions (OC: GCF): 0: 100; 25:75; 50:50; 75:25 and 100:0%. The data after 51 days of cultivation showed that the increase of the concentration of GCF in relation to the organic compound decreased height, dry biomass, Dickson Quality Index and the contents of N, P, K, Ca and Mg of the seedlings. There was no difference for these characteristics between the use of UWC and the EC. The substrate with 100% of GCF without complementary fertilizers caused symptoms of N deficiency in the moringa seedlings.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento de mudas de gravioleira (Anonna muricata L.) inoculadas com FMAs e cultivadas com diferentes doses de fósforo (P), em solo não-esterilizado. O experimento foi conduzido em casa-de-vegetação, com delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 (inoculação x doses de P) sendo: plantas não-inoculadas (controle), inoculadas com Glomus clarum, inoculadas com Gigaspora margarita e inoculadas com inóculo nativo (Glomus macrocarpum, G. etunicatum e Entrosphopora colombiana) e quatro doses de P (0, 25, 50, 100 mg kg-1) com três repetições. As mudas foram cultivadas em sacos de plástico de 2 dm³ em mistura de solo e areia (2:1 v v-1) nãoesterilizada. Aos 90 dias após o plantio, observou-se que a inoculação com os FMAs promoveu maior altura e diâmetro de caule das mudas, maior produção de matéria seca e conteúdo de P nas raízes e parte aérea e maior conteúdo de K nas raízes das mudas, comparativamente ao controle não-inoculado. As plantas não-inoculadas, não responderam à adubação fosfatada, concluindo-se que a inoculação com os FMAs, aliada à adubação fosfatada, incrementam o crescimento e o estado nutricional de mudas de gravioleira mesmo quando cultivadas em substrato não-estéril.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the development of soursop (Annona muricata L.) seedlings inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) cultivated with different doses of phosphorus (P). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with a completely randomized factorial design (4 x 4), with non inoculated plants (controls), three species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Glomus clarum, Gigaspora margarita and native AMFs (Glomus macrocarpum, G. etunicatum and Entrosphopora colombiana) and four doses of P (0, 25, 50, 100 mg kg-1) with three replications. The seedlings were cultivated in plastic bags of 2 dm³ in a mix composed of nonsterilized soil and sand (2:1 v v-1). After 90 days, it was observed that AMFs inoculation promoted an increment in height and stem diameter, increased biomass and P content of shoot and roots, and K content in the roots of the seedlings in comparison with controls. The non inoculated plants did not respond to phosphorus fertilization, concluding that the inoculation with AMFs with phosphate fertilization increased growth and nutritional state of soursup seedlings even when cultivated in non-sterilized soil.

O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) no crescimento de mudas de acácia (Acacia mangium Willd.), sesbânia (Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers.) e eucalipto (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.) em casa-de-vegetação e o comportamento dessas espécies, inoculadas ou não com FMAs, em monocultivo e/ou consórcio em áreas degradadas pela extração de argila. Aos 75 dias após a semeadura (DAS), mudas de acácia e sesbânia, inoculadas com FMAs, apresentaram incrementos de 21,5 e 6,5% na altura, respectivamente, em relação às não-inoculadas. Semelhantemente o acúmulo de matéria seca na parte aérea de acácia e sesbânia com FMAs foi de 50 e 52%, respectivamente, em relação às nãoinoculadas. Na cava-de-extração de argila, as espécies apresentaram elevada taxa de sobrevivência (> 80%) e rápido crescimento, com altura média de 7 m para acácia e eucalipto e de 3,5 m para sesbânia, aos 600 dias após o plantio (DAPC). O efeito da inoculação com FMAs sobre o crescimento das espécies, na área de extração de argila, ocorreu marcadamente para a A. manguim, principalmente entre 45 e 220 DAPC. Pelos dados obtidos até a coleta do experimento (600 DAPC), não se observaram efeitos do consórcio entre as espécies.

This work aimed to evaluate, under greenhouse conditions, the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the growth of Acacia mangium, Sesbania virgata and Eucalyptus camaldulensis. The behavior of these plant species inoculated or not with AMF, cultivated in single and intercropping systems, in the field in an area of clay extraction, was also evaluated. Under greenhouse conditions, at 75 days of sown, the AMF inoculation increased the height of A. mangium and S. virgata in 21.5 and 6.5%, respectively. The AMF inoculation also increased the shoot dry mass of A . mangium and S . virgata by 50 and 52%, respectively. Under field conditions, the plants grown in the clay extraction area presented high survivor rate (> 80%) and fast growth. At 600 days of planting (DAP), A. mangium and E. camaldulensis reached 7 m in height, while S. virgata had 3.5 m. The effects of AMF inoculation on plant growth occurred markedly in A . mangium, between 45 and 220 DAP. Until the date that the experiment was harvested (600 DAP), no effect of the intercropping system was observed on plant growth.

O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) na nutrição de mudas de acácia (Acacia mangium Willd.), sesbânia (Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers.) e eucalipto (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.) em casa-de-vegetação, bem como a influência dos FMAs, do monocultivo e/ou consórcio sobre os teores dos nutrientes nas folhas das plantas em cava degradada pela extração de argila. Em casa-de-vegetação, mudas de acácia inoculadas com FMAs tiveram incrementos nos conteúdos de N, P e Zn de 22, 71 e 67%, respectivamente; as de sesbânia, de 39, 49, 56, 24, 105 e 54%, respectivamente para N, P, Ca, Mg, Mn e Zn. Na cava de extração de argila, plantas de acácia consorciadas com sesbânia apresentaram menor teor de Ca nas folhas. Ainda, no consórcio com eucalipto, plantas de acácia inoculadas com FMAs tiveram incrementos de 36% no teor de Mg, em relação às sem inoculação. Plantas de sesbânia consorciadas com acácia e/ou eucalipto apresentaram menor teor de Mg, em relação às do monocultivo. Por outro lado, plantas de eucalipto consorciadas com acácia e/ou sesbânia sem FMAs apresentaram menor teor de N, em relação às do monocultivo. Até o presente momento, não foram observadas melhorias nutricionais em plantas de eucalipto advindas do consórcio com acácia e/ou sesbânia.

This work aimed to evaluate, under greenhouse conditions, the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the nutrient uptake of Acacia mangium, Sesbania virgata and Eucalyptus camaldulensis, as well as, the influence of these fungi on the shoot nutrient content of these plant species, when cultivated in single and intercropping systems, under field conditions in an area of clay extraction. Under greenhouse conditions, AMF inoculation increased N, P and Zn content of A. mangium by 22, 71 and 67%, respectively, and in S. virgata the increase of N, P, Ca, Mg, Mn and Zn was of 39, 49, 56, 24, 105 and 54%, respectively. Under field conditions, A. mangium,when cultivated together with S. virgata, presented lowest Ca content in shoots. AMF inoculation increased the Mg content in A. mangium by 36%,when the plants were grown together with E. camaldulensis. S. virgata plants in intercrop with A. mangium and/or E. camaldulensis presented lower Mg content than when cultivated in single system. On the other hand, E. camaldulensis plants without AMF inoculation cultivated together with A. mangium and/or S. virgata presented lower N content than the plants grown in single system. No nutritional improvement was observed in E. camaldulensis plants due to intercropping systems.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes concentrações de um análogo de brassinosteróide e a inoculação com o fungo micorrízico Acaulospora scrobiculata (FMA) sobre o crescimento e estado nutricional da tangerineira 'Cleópatra', da semeadura à repicagem. O experimento foi realizado em condições de casa de vegetação na Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 5x2 com quatro repetições, sendo cinco concentrações de um análogo de brassinosteróide, Biobras-16 (0,0; 0,1; 0,5; 0,75 e 1,00 mg L-1) e com ou sem inoculação com FMA. A inoculação com o FMA promoveu maior crescimento em altura, número de folhas, diâmetro do caule, área foliar e na massa seca das folhas e do caule. O Biobras-16 promoveu efeito benéfico no diâmetro do caule. Os conteúdos de P, K, Fe e Mn foram mais elevados nas plantas inoculadas. Os resultados mostraram que a associação dos dois fatores estudados modificam o crescimento do porta-enxerto.

'Cleópatra' mandarin submitted to mycorrhization and to a brassinosteroid analogue. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of a brassinosteroid analogue and inoculation of the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) Acaulospora scrobiculata on the 'Cleópatra' mandarin from the sowing until transplant point. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions at Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense. The experimental design utilized was a randomized block with a 5x2 factorial scheme with 4 replications, using 5 concentrations of a brassinosteroid analogue, Biobras-16 (0.0; 0.1; 0.5 and 1.00 mg L-1) and with or without AMF inoculation. The AMF inoculation caused increment in height, number of leaves, diameter of the stem, leaf area and dry mass of the leaf and stem. The Biobras16 promoted an increment of the diameter of the stem. The P, K, Fe and Mn contents were higher in the AMF inoculated plants. Results show that the association of the two factors studied modifies the growth of rootstock.

Para a reabilitação e utilização de áreas afetadas por excesso de sais, é necessário avaliar como as espécies vegetais respondem à salinidade. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o efeito do aumento da concentração de NaCl sobre características biométricas da parte aérea e sistema radicular de mudas de E. camaldulensis, E. tereticornis, E. pellita e E. robusta. O experimento, em casa de vegetação, foi conduzido em vasos de 11,5 L, contendo areia, e irrigados com solução nutritiva. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial com quatro espécies e cinco níveis de salinidade (1,41; 2,50; 4,50; 6,45; e 8,33 dS m-1), em cinco repetições. Avaliaram-se as características biométricas (masa seca, comprimento e diâmetro) da parte aérea e do sistema radicular das mudas. O aumento no nível de salinidade até a condutividade elétrica de 8,33 dS m-1 não prejudicou o crescimento inicial de mudas de E. tereticornis, mas causou redução na massa seca de raízes grossas dessa espécie. O crescimento das mudas de E. camaldulensis, E. pellita e E. robusta foi reduzido em resposta ao aumento do nível de salinidade. O E. tereticornis, na fase de crescimento inicial, apresenta resistência à salinidade, considerando-se a condutividade elétrica testada de até 8,33 dS m-1. As características comprimento e área de raízes, nas quatro espécies estudadas, não responderam ao aumento do nível de salinidade.

The rehabilitation and use of areas affected by salt excess require to evaluate how plant species respond to salinity. The objective of this work was to evaluate increasing NaCl concentrations on stem and root biometric characteristics of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. tereticornis, E. pellita and E. robusta seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse using containers with 11.5 L of sand irrigated with nutrient solution. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized and factorial design with the four species and increasing levels of NaCl (1.41; 2.50; 4.50; 6.45; e 8.33 dS.m-1), with five replications. The evaluated biometric characteristics were dry mass, length and diameter of the stems and root systems of the seedlings. The increase in salt level up to 8.33 dS.m-1 electric conductivity did not impair the initial growth of E. tereticornis seedlings but decreased dry mass of thick roots. Increasing salt levels reduced growth of E. camaldulensis, E. pellita and E. robusta seedlings. In the initial growth phase, seedlings of E. tereticornis showed resistance to salinity up to 8.33 dS.m-1. Length and root areas of the four studied species showed no response to increasing salt levels.

O aprofundamento do sistema radicular no solo é condicionado por relações Ca/Al adequadas, podendo a calagem subsuperficial apresentar efeito positivo no crescimento das raízes e na absorção de nutrientes. Assim sendo, foi realizado um experimento em colunas de solo, em casa de vegetação, no qual se avaliou a absorção de Al, Ca, Mg e P por duas variedades de cafeeiros (Catuaí e Icatu), uma sensível e outra tolerante ao Al, respectivamente, em função da aplicação em subsuperfície de sete doses de calcário (0,0; 0,49; 1,7; 2,9; 4,1; 6,6 e 9,3 t ha-1). Cultivaram-se as plantas até 6,5 meses de idade, em solo acondicionado em colunas de PVC, subdivididas em três anéis. O anel superior recebeu calcário e fertilização. Nos dois anéis inferiores, as saturações por Al (m %) variaram de 0 a 93 %. A aplicação de calcário na subsuperfície aumentou os teores de Ca e Mg na parte aérea e nas raízes e o teor de P nas folhas superiores de ambas as variedades. A eficiência de utilização de Ca na parte aérea e em raízes decresceu com a aplicação do calcário em subsuperfície para ambas as variedades, enquanto a eficiência de utilização de P diminuiu somente para a parte aérea da var. Icatu. A aplicação do calcário na subsuperfície reduziu o teor de Al na parte aérea da var. Icatu e em raízes da var. Catuaí. Os teores de P, Ca e Mg nas folhas foram adequados às variedades, independentemente da quantidade de calcário aplicada ao solo, indicando que a adubação e a correção da acidez da camada superficial do solo foram eficientes para manter a planta nutrida, independentemente do teor de Al na subsuperfície do solo.

The Ca/Al ratio is determinant for root deepening in the soil subsurface layer. Liming this layer can improve root growth and nutrient absorption. Thus, a greenhouse trial was carried out using soil columns. Two varieties of coffee plants (Catuaí and Icatú), one Al-sensitive and the other Al-tolerant, respectively, were evaluated in limed and surface-fertilized soil, whereas 0.0; 0.49; 1.7; 2.9; 4.1; 6.6 and 9.3 t ha-1 of limestone were applied to the subsurface soil. Plants were cultivated for 6.5 months in soil accommodated in PVC columns, subdivided in three rings. In the two lower rings Al saturation varied from 0 to 93 %. Limestone application in the subsurface raised the Ca and Mg contents in the shoot and roots, and P concentration in the upper leaves of both varieties. Following subsurface limestone application, Ca utilization efficiency decreased for both varieties, by the shoot as well as by roots. The P utilization efficiency by the shoot decreased only in the Icatú variety. Subsurface limestone application reduced the Al content in the aerial part of Icatú and in Catuaí roots. The leaf concentration of P, Ca and Mg remained at adequate levels in both varieties, indicating that fertilization and acidity correction of the surface soil layers were efficient at maintaining the plant nutrient levels, independent of Al levels in the soil subsurface.

O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o crescimento, em casa de vegetação, de mudas de Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers., produzidas em substrato de cavas de extração de argila e adubadas com subprodutos orgânicos. As mudas foram cultivadas em vasos de 5 L, adicionando-se ao substrato "ferkal", composto de lixo urbano e torta de filtro, em diferentes doses (40, 80, 120 e 160 g dm-3), e comparadas com o controle (sem adubação). O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco repetições, constituídas de uma planta. Aos quatro meses após a semeadura, foram feitas avaliações de altura, diâmetro do colo, matéria seca da parte aérea e de raízes laterais. Também foram determinados comprimento, área superficial das raízes laterais, colonização micorrízica e teores foliares de N, P e K. O substrato sem adubação originou mudas com maiores dimensões de altura, diâmetro do colo e matéria seca da parte aérea. Contudo, não houve diferenças com relação à matéria seca, comprimento e área superficial das raízes e colonização micorrízica, entre os tratamentos. Constatou-se tendência de crescimento dos valores das características morfológicas da parte aérea das mudas, à medida que as doses foram aumentadas. Os teores foliares de N, P e K das mudas que não receberam adição dos subprodutos foram menores em relação às mudas adubadas. Os resultados evidenciaram que o uso de sesbânia para revegetação de cavas de extração de argila não implica gastos adicionais com fertilizantes orgânicos. Entretanto, a adição dos subprodutos estudados pode favorecer a formação de serapilheira mais rica em nutrientes.

The objective of this work was to evaluate Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. seedling growth, in greenhouse condition, cultivated in a substrate collected in a clay extraction area and fertilized with organic byproducts. The seedlings were grown in containers (5 L) filled with this growth medium and fertilized with "ferkal", urban waste and sugar cane filter cake in different doses (40, 80, 120 and 160 g dm-3) and compared to the control treatment (substrate without fertilization). The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, with five replicates of one seedling. Four months after sowing, stem height, root collar diameter, shoot and lateral roots dry matter were evaluated. Length, superficial area and mycorrhizal colonization of the roots were evaluated, as well as the N, P and K content of the leaves. The control seedlings showed higher values for stem height, root collar diameter and shoot dry matter. However, no difference related to the root dry matter length, root superficial area, and mycorrhizal colonization among the treatments were observed. Growth tendency of the shoot morphological characteristics of the seedlings was observed with increasing doses. The N, P and K leaf content was lower without addition of the byproducts in relation to the fertilized seedlings. Sesbania seedlings can be planted in substrate from clay extraction area, without additional expenses with organic fertilizers. However, the addition of studied byproducts can promote the formation of a richer nutritional litter.
